White House Announces Federal Worker Job Cuts as Shutdown Approaches Three-Week Mark

The White House disclosed the start of government employee layoffs on the end of the week, following through on earlier warnings linked to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is now poised to extend into its third consecutive week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

Russell Vought posted on a public platform that “RIFs have begun,” referring to the government’s procedure for letting employees go.

While the official provided no details on which departments were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that layoff warnings had been distributed within that department. Furthermore, a DHS representative noted that layoffs would take place at the CISA. Also, a labor organization representing federal workers announced that members at the Education Department would be impacted by the reduction in force.

Union Response and Legal Challenges

Union leaders cautions that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on public services relied upon by millions of Americans and pledged to challenge the actions in court.

“It is disgraceful that the administration has exploited the funding lapse as an excuse to wrongfully terminate thousands of workers who deliver essential functions to communities nationwide,” stated a national union president, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.

The AFL-CIO responded to the news, declaring, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Budget Dispute

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to support a GOP-supported legislation to reopen the government unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. After repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have adjourned the Senate until the following week, indicating the standoff is not expected to be resolved soon.

During a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, Mike Johnson, criticized Senate Democrats for not supporting the GOP proposal, which passed in the lower chamber on a largely partisan basis.

“This is the last paycheck that government employees will see until opposition leaders decide to do their job and reopen the government,” Johnson said. Beginning shortly, American service members, many of whom live on tight budgets, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Judicial and Practical Limits

Previously, unions filed for a court injunction to prevent the administration from carrying out any reductions in force during the shutdown. Moreover, a federal judge directed the administration to provide specifics on termination strategies, affected agencies, and if any federal employees had been brought back to execute layoffs.

A report contended that a government shutdown limits the authority of the government to carry out firings, citing official advice that admitted any long-term staff cuts need to have been initiated prior to the funding expired.

Impact on Workers

The layoffs occurred on the same day that government employees got only a incomplete payment covering the final days of the previous month but excluding the start of the current month, since appropriations expired at the beginning of the month.

Max Stier, the president of the advocacy group, criticized the political stalemate’s impact on federal employees.

“It is wrong to make federal employees suffer because our elected officials in the legislature and the White House have not succeeded to keep our federal operations running,” Stier stated. The flight regulators, VA nurses, wildland firefighters and safety officials are not responsible for this funding crisis.”

A notable point is that members of Congress and top administration officials are continuing to be paid amid the shutdown.
